Can anyone tell me when the metal cap secured by a ring of wire was used to stop bottles of spirits?  I have a couple of Gordon's Gin bottles (from the Linden, NJ distillery, not the British version) that are still sealed by that method, and I'd like to be able to date them.

Also, is there any way to date a bottle from the stamped number on a revenue strip?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Without a pic it's hard to tell. Are you talking about the cork and seal top. Looks kinda like a crown top but has a wire around the neck and it fits over the top of the bottle. I have dug those bottles and have some of the original tops. I think they came out in the 20's.

There are several patents for stoppers like that. If you could post a picture I could probably help you out.

I have a gordon's with the same seal. It was called the cork and seal closure. It was used on liquor bottles an the 1920's and 30's.

It would be much easier to date the bottle by looking at where the seam ends and the base rather then the metal cap.
