you folks are my last effort to identify this bottle - 4/9/2003 7:37:48 PM

This bottle is 1 1/8" tall without the cap and 1 1/2" wide across the bottom. It has eight panels. There is no seam and absolutely no marking on the bottle. The cover has the word sterling stamped on one edge. I am assuming that it is an inkwell, but maybe not American. I found it with my metal detector thanks to the cover. I have tried a few resources but am having no luck with information on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Kerry

i would not consider this piece a bottle ,and i doubt it to be an inkwell. what it might be is a cosmetic pot . it looks like part of a ladies dresser set from the early part of the century. and i say that because of the lid being sterling. i dont think anyone would have put that kind of quality into a throw-away item. it might have held cold cream or powder and made to be kept and refilled . nice find.

Kerry - I completely agree with diggerjeff. Also, I have found a sterling silver lid much like this one in a bottle dumpsite that was from a lady' s turn of the century toilet set. Mine had initials engraved in the center, but the jar underneath was missing. Hope this helps. Congratulations on the great find!
