I picked this one up recently for about what I usually see unlabeled ones going for.

Only about 70% of the label remains, but it was still too neat to pass up.

It seems that some of the product has left a residue atop part of the labels, especially on the back.
Help of what can clean it off, without damaging the label?

As a note of interest, the top is applied.
The base has just a B on it.
Date unknown as I cannot read the tax stamps.

Bear, the reverse labels were of much darker color than the front so that part is O K. From my experience you can clean the residue with a soft damp (not wet) cloth rubbing very gently. Take your time, don't over pressure. Don't get the label really wet, if it gets too wet let it dry and start over. These labels are around so if you cause a little damage it's not the end of the world but I know you don't want to damage it. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.

Hello Bear. from the label design, you have the 1875-1883 version of the Hostetters. Its a crap shoot as to who made the bottle as just about every major glass co in the USA made Hostetters bottles at one time or another, they sold zillions of bottles of bitters each year after 1870 up until they went out of business during prohibition. Botlguy is correct about cleaning the labels just take it slowly, I also believe that repro labels can be bought for these bottles.....Andy
