Local History via Bottles

My interest in bottles started when I found a broken bottle with Mt. Kisco Bottling Co embossed on the heel. I contacted the local historical society and they sent me some archival newspaper articles about the company. Since then I think I have managed to connect the earliest known bottler in 1890 (Boehmer Bros) o the one that closed in the 1970s Mt. Kisco Bottling Co. Using old maps, local dig finds and the power of Facebook to speak to surviving family members...

Boehmer's (1890 - 1905) was located less than 100 yards from New Castle (1905 - 1920) the Di Micco Bros (1920) operated in roughly the same area until 1950 when they moved a mile down the road, changed their name to Mt. Kisco Bottling and continued until 1970.

The discovery of a New Castle Bottling Co. bottle last week (and subsequent research nailing down the 1905-1920 dates of operation) was the missing link between the Boehmer Bros and MK Bottling.

you can discover a lot of local history thru bottles , I find here a lot of the bottles and bottlers are not listed or even talked about in the local history books , whatever reason they seemed to over look them , talk about old stores downtown and dairies sometimes but small pop bottlers and such , isn't a lot about them
the old bottles are a great way to learn about past businesses and such the operated in your area and the people behind them

I agree with RCO. It seems that every small town in the country had a local bottler at some time between the 1870's & the 1950's. Some of my favorite finds are from towns that are no longer big enough for a post office or even a stop light. Some people may remember drinking a certain flavor as kids, but no one remembers that it was bottled down the street.
