Awesome article

"High tariffs protected our manufacturers by making imported goods more expensive to the American consumer than goods produced in America. Also, the high tariff on imports made more federal money available for internal improvements."

Ummm... the sign says principal output included whimsies?

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong -- I thought whimseys were non-production items made by glass workers during slow times.

Errrr, the sign actually says "whimseys." Perhaps the sign maker or town fathers were just feeling whimsical that day. I get like that myself from time to time...
