found this while i was filling in an older pit.

i own an unembossed lion cologne and have handled
quite a few over the past few years.

this one though was embossed

PHILADa it appears on one side

and E.ROUSSEL on the other side.

there were several whole and broken pontiled smalls dug
with ROUSSELL on them. we don't get a lot of this stuff up here
in carbon county.

i know Roussell was a prolific bottler down in Philly, we just don't see alot of up here.

this little waste bowl was in ther also

i guess it's a waste bowl. don't know what else it could be.....

stamped on the back:

JAMES EDWARD
DALEHAL?

the last letter is obscured by a blemish in the firing.

thanks Matt, that site for James Edwards and his Ironstone is well done.

didn't see this particular stamp on any of the examples.

The pieces I found had a black glaze mark. He made a LOT of ceramics over many years so there is likely much variation out there.

Matt, have you seen the lion cologne bottles embossed?

if Roussel had them personalized, maybe other distributors did the same....

I don't pay too much attention to cologne bottles. I know Roussel was one of the biggest early Philly manufacturers. He was into everything , shaving cream (pot lids) , mineral water, perfumes, drugs, etc etc. He certainly had the funds to get his own molds made. The unembossed text versions may have been his too.

Jim, that's weird, we dug a broken cologne like that last week and I was also wandering about the embossing on the sides .
