I headed back out to a surface dump I came across this spring and took along a probe I made from some 3/16” steel rod I had laying around. It’s L shaped and about 16” in length. It works perfect for most of the dumps I find that are just below the surface and usually full of roots. I can poke around and only dig in places I hear glass instead of fighting the roots to expose what’s underneath.
Here’s my take from the dump.

All of the clear bottles besides 3 of the half pint flasks have a purple tint to the glass.

Second complete milk I’ve found. It has damage but I was able to glue the broken piece back in place. Pre 1915 I’m guessing. It has a purple tint visible at the base.

Here’s the smalls. Paper shotgun shell, Overall button and a shell button. I was also able to salvage the lid on the milk glass jar that also has nice grey swirls mixed in the glass

There were lots of broken bottles as well including two different locals beers, a slick strap sided flask, multiple embossed medicines and a stoneware jug. Due to its location and no homesteads near by I’m guessing that this was a possible logging camp dump but I’m not sure. I don’t think I’m finished at this place but I’m gonna take a break for now to explore new areas!

That pre pro bottle is very cool. Anything with a star on it displays very nicely.

Thanks it was definitely my favorite from the dig. Next time I’m hoping the local beer is intact instead but I’ll take an embossed beer any day!

Thought I should share my homemade mini probe Incase anyone was curious as to what it looks like.
I was in a hurry so I didn’t have time to oil the handle before getting it all covered in dirt.

I've found a few Ohio Bottles here in Michigan. Nice Button. LEON.

It does make the back story a little more interesting on how the bottle got up here. Was it brought up by a man traveling by train or steamship? I guess will never know. Not sure how far beer was distributed before prohibition, maybe a couple cases were hauled up this way. Either way this was the only one on the dig site no shards or broken pieces.

Found one in the digging bag, stuffed it in the side pocket and forgot it was there for 3 weeks. Turned out being the only blown medical bottle I found that day. Lots of bubbles, purple tint to the glass and a crooked neck. Happy to find this one :)
