Does anyone have any ideas as to what may have been the original contents of this bottle? It appears to have had a circular label on the front at some point. It's heavy and measures 7 inches tall and 3 1/4 inches wide at the base. The only markings are on the back which reads: "Bottle To Be Washed and Returned". Many thanks.

Oh wow that's a great find, that's a very early milk bottle! It's called the Warren Milk Bottle and the design dates back to the 1870s, much earlier than most other milk bottles.

Does it have any other markings?

Thank you for this valuable information. There are no additional markings other than what is on the back. I wonder if this could be an early Warren Milk Bottle, (1890), even though it seems to have an 1892 Sanborn wire bail?

They may have continued making them for a while, or alternatively the dairy could have replaced the wire bail after using the bottle for several years.
