So iv often thought about running in to bottles that are maybe highly toxic or had something in them that could be detrimental to my health.
Who else has had this worry & what steps have you taken to prepare your cleaning days?
Do any of you worry that actual remains have lasted this whole time being in the ground & still remain active?
I don't get scared much about the cleaning part, but have wondered from time to time what if this could actually be dangerous to soak & clean & how contaminated the water could be afterwards. Or just cork & clean the outside.
I have an outside 2 divided shop sink that I hook the hose up to. I soak with dawn antibacterial soap & peroxide & if the inside is being stubborn when using a bottle brush I let it dry out then add water then drop Alka Seltzer tabs inside. I wear long rubber gloves. Began to wear safety glasses because the brush likes to sprinkle back up at you. Some bottles it crosses my mind to also wear a mask covering my mouth but haven't. Lol, maybe I'm just over thinking......... anyone else have had those thoughts?

Get a respirator designed for fumes and vapor. I dont run into to much water filled bottles but always open them and dump them outside. The ones I have run into can stink worst than you can imagine. Smell so bad you can taste it. Absolutely horrible. I always flush with clean water then bleach water will kill about anything. I have never gotten sick from any bottle other than being grossed out by the contents or the odor. Guys always joke about taking a swig of the liquid. It's a funny joke Don't get me wrong. I just wouldn't recommend doing it.

Thanks for the reminder of using bleach, I usually use dawn & peroxide and let them soak for sometimes - for weeks in 5 gallon buckets. Figuring by then, the remaining substances will be killed off or easily cleaned. I haven't been one to immediately clean when dug up; relying on the bath solution soak to really get on the glass to eat away what it can before scrubbing. I dont use bleach because iv never been sure about the glass coloring being damaged; since I do soak for weeks. But I think I'll do a trial & examine how they turn out.

Weeks of soaking. I dont think it could hurt the glass. I would be more concerned with a negative chemical reaction of the cleaner and the stuff left in the bottle. I would dump anything really nasty into another container to evaporate. It's better than in the ground or water table.
