I'm pretty sure that book is unrelated to Charles Hedden. Hedden's Store was a historic general store in Oregon run by a totally different person named Hedden, and it closed down in 1976 - two years after that book was published. I think that book was simply a bottle collector's guide which they were selling at the store during the west coast bottle digging craze of the 70s.Here is a link to Hedden's proprietary medicine.

I have to agree with you, the apostrophe s I think changes everything. There is a hedden out of SanFransco that I found, but not much info on it. In the case of the Charles Hedden bottle, I think you're right that it's a perfume. Both the shape and the use of a neck label are fairly standard for perfumes.
I don't think Hedden's is the one that the bottle is from. Canadian Bottle posted the same thing I was thinking. The 's throws it off. I found something about C.H. out of Sanfrancisco but why New York on bottle, another head scratcher. Here is a link to Hedden's proprietary medicine.
