I let my ACL's dry out for at least a month. the longer the better, after a month soak in warm water & lightly, very gently brush away dirt with well used non stiff tooth brush. Works for me. LEON.

I agree. The toothbrush is a great tool, in the field dry application too.

Dig Part 2:

Going to a familiar and pre-planned digging site kinda feels like going out for a day of fishing instead of exploration. When I'm out walking in the woods or looking for old homesteads, I feel deeply connected to my humanity-a connection to nature and the desperate recovery of ancient artifacts left behind by those who struggled before us.

Since the dig site was a good mix of rusty cans, broken glass, metal, concrete chunks, charcoal, and whole bottles, I went prepped just with a probe (my trusty [but not-so-friendly to bottles and strangers] spear), a shovel, and a camera.

Basically, the site was a recent construction pit across from an old bottling works that had left a 20' X 6' X 5' chunk of earth-topped with a pad of concrete. Some of this 20' span was missing the concrete top so I just decided to make that my days work in the hot Sunday sun.

After getting permission confirmed, I went to work slowly digging out the lower portions of the pit to intentionally cause garbage avalanches (yes, I am lazy and willing to take certain risks). This saved me a lot of time because the pit was probably 80-90% complete trash anyways and not salvageable stuff. Trying to avoid major avalanches (one cracked my camera screen and was totally worth it for the footage that day), I worked through a 5' tall X 3' X 3' section of the wall to slowly reveal the targets I was after ;). Finds below (bottles listed top down, left to right):

First Picture-

1. The Prize! Art Deco (?) Dr. Pepper, clear. This was my 2nd target once I found the broken one from the previous post. I couldn't find any info or pictures of this bottle online. Any info is welcome on this bottle from my local town :)
2. Two Debossed logo Dr. Peppers, clear. One of these is from my local town :)
3. Three generic milks, clear
4. Two broken debossed logo Dr. Peppers for cups :)
5. I found more of these Abbott Laboratories half-size hanging IV bottles, clear. https://oldfoolrn.blogspot.com/2018/04/when-and-why-glass-iv-bottles.html <---This link explains why these bottles are no longer used. Probably had something to do with stopper material breaking off into the bottle and then how the screw-cap design like these would allow for bacteria growth in the threads of the cap. Pretty cool to own a piece of history like this!

Third Picture -
1. 1942-1962 Two Dr Caldwells Pepsin (Laxative), Light Aqua https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_716188 https://glassbottlemarks.com/dr-caldwells-monticello-illinois/
2. ACL with no label left. No information available other than the glass makers mark.
3. Two more debossed logo Dr. Peppers, clear. One will become a drinking glass.
4. Barqs "Drink Barqs - its good", clear. This was a cool find!
5. Bird ceramic. This guy is going in the garden.
6. Toni Hair perm (?), clear. https://www.nytimes.com/1979/12/31/...k-new-formulas-and-styles-end-slow-sales.html ----->Purchased by Gilette in 1948
7. Brooks catsup, clear. https://www.catsupbottle.com/history.html
8. Zippo lighter. To be identified.
9. Three small Ball Jars-Either apothecary or spice, clear.
10. Clorox cap to match my clorox bottles. Seems like the caps are rarer than the bottles at this point.
11. Richelieu food company bottle? It has the neck/head of a cologne bottle but it seems like a sauce bottle. not sure. Any help appreciated.
12. generic med
13. Jergens lotion different variation than the last, clear. https://www.reference.com/world-view/history-jergens-lotion-392e2ff268e4cf00
14. Glass tube, possibly part of a television? Unsure.

Fifth Picture -
1. Two Peoples Dairy ACL pint milks with local town on them, clear.
2. Have-A-Cola ACL. Not too bad condition considering the dig site. Has anyone every heard anything about this brand before?
3. And finally, the first target that I was ever after when I saw this dig site- a complete ACL NuGrape soda. I probably went through at least 30 broken ones before I found this bad boy. Excited to let it dry out and clean it up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NuGrape :D
4. A warped bar glass/clear cup

Welp, that's enough digging at this site for a while. I found two good condition local sodas, a few good ACLs and some neat meds. Some of these really need some CLR treatment.

I know it is a huge leap, but next I'm working on plotting some civil war maps so let's see where that leads me!

Real nice work- (make sure your notebook is preserved). A serious Dr. Pepper drinker at that site! (Great finds.)
And a little something for the garden too. :) Congrats + good luck on that proposed Civil War site.

Btw, I remember Toni. They ran a lot of ads. Classic '50s-'60s. I believe they used an early superglue to hold those curls! :D

I see a Hava Drink ACL Bottle in my ACL Soda Book, but do not see a Hav-A-Cola in the Book? Could that mean it's a rare one or common overlooked? LEON.

Thanks Len! By notebook, do you mean a detailed record of all my finds? That's not too bad of an idea.

This site was definitely loaded with NuGrape and script debossed Dr Peppers.

That is incredible that they used a form of super glue. If a simple liquid would help hold hair shape for 3-6 months, that's very impressive.

@hemihampton My eyes apparently don't work as I was searching google for "Have-a-Cola". I see one listed on ebay in good condition for a steep 37$ plus $10.70 shipping. That is the only mention i can find after a quick search on the internet for "hav-a-cola".

HEY MRCURE,

Some keep records of their dig efforts in script and/or pics. Others choose not to. Some decide on a site by site basis for partial records either for self reference and /or posterity. ...Some digs will be lost to time. Some future archaeologists can figure out.;)...

Btw, I'm really not positive if Toni's composition included high grade glue but those '60s dews never had a hair out of place, even in strong wind. My fav was the "beehive." --Just think of Yeoman Rand on the original Star Trek series.
