sometimes i'd use a wooden stick to poke around with , the spot i checked wasn't that deep with silt though but was bottles hiding in the sandy bottom , i'd often find stuff that way

but depends on the location and what % chance you honestly think there is old bottles there , the spot i checked was an old dock near an old store/hotel so % chance very high

if its some random lake and nothing historical nearby i'd say chance of old bottles being there is rather low %
I am not expecting anything pre-1900, but figure there may be some neat soda bottles around the boat launch and oldest homes on the lake.

It's a pretty small lake, average depth is 20-ish ft. (Weird topography! 5ft then boom! 60ft!) Lots of logging history in the area.

On days like today, with crazy wind and waves that reduce visibility to nonexistent, you can still do this though...

Indeed.
I think it was a cutthroat? Zero rainbow on him.

Been catching tons of rainbows, cutthroat and large mouth bass, a few perch and one crazy big bluegill.
All with a single lure!

The cutthroat fight the best, and the bass hit the hardest.

definitely only be bottles in places where there had been human activity , but can sometimes be hard to tell where that occured as people might of camped or had picnics in random places

boat launches and docks are often the easiest and best spots to look

the first and most important thing about diving for bottles in low vis is the risk of entanglement on something you didn't see. I move slowly into the current so as much as possible the silt is blown behind me.

Zero current..

I carry a knife (lost one already), but there is not a whole lot to get caught up on/in here.

The lack of current and huge amount of silt is crazy frustrating! It takes sooo long for visibility to even somewhat return..

I usually carry several knives in case I get tangled and can't reach one. A lack of current is a definite negative. Maybe something like an underwater scooter would help you create an artificial current around your search area and blow some of the silt out so you don't have to dig as much

Lol.
Wayyyy outta my league and budget...
It's a nice thought though.
If only..

I got guns to finish, and glass and ammo to buy. Zero budget for fancy underwater whatnot...
