Aloha!

I am a fresh newbie so please give me some slack.

I am a student at Kalani HS in East Oahu. In my general activities, I've come across a wide variety of glass. The majority is modern but I have noted quite a few exceptions. I recently got permission to dig in the rear portion of the campus. I dug several holes and to my surprise, despite the surface being littered with old glass and porcelain, beyond the 1ft level, there was nothing else.

I've done my research and I do know that before Kalani HS was built in 1958, there were multiple pig farms and a Japanese worker village. I can trace this back to roughly the 1920s. Beyond that point, the only signs of habitation were a slew of newspaper articles dating to the 1870s-1890s. I'm specifically digging the bed of the old Waialae-Iki stream. As I said, I expected to find lots of bottles in that spot especially considering people back then would often dump trash in the streams. But, there was nothing beyond the 1ft level. And even then, only scattered fragments popped out.

Most of the glass fragments will forever remain unidentified but, I have luckily been able to figure out what a few of these fragments once were a part of. I have found fragments of Best Foods Mayo Jars, a Royal Soda 6 1/2oz. Bottle, a Hero Glass works jar, and interestingly an 1880s Clarke & White mineral water. Also, I found multiple bits of blue-glazed porcelain of Japanese manufacture and a Japanese coin from 1921.

Attached are some photos of the aforementioned pieces.

Let me know your thoughts! I am interested to see what more experienced diggers think of my finds!

Welcome aboard, you already seem to have a pretty good handle on identifying shards of glass, I tend to to be more of a digger than a researcher. Dig deeper, move around the area, If you don't find anything which happens a lot move on to a new area.
There are many good members on the site willing to help you'll probably get more responses.

Thanks for the encouragement. I will probably go back to around the same spot and dig another hole and I am trying to get permission to dig in another spot on campus that looks like it might be the late 1800s. This was a real pick me up after not finding much in my other hole.

I imagine Hawaii has some neat history?

Lord only knows how many various peoples made their way out there over time? And what they may have left behind..

That's why you have to go deep, I'm in Chicago area and people have dug the dump pretty heavily but I'm still finding really good stuff.

So in the location, I'm digging into specifically, there used to be pig farms and residences with mostly Japanese immigrant families back in the 20s through the 50s. There may have been houses back there in the early 1900s but I can't find much to back that up. So far, I can find mentions of Japanese, White, and a sole Mexican living in the valley from 1920-1940.

Prior to this, there are a lot of newspapers dating to the 1880s and 1890s. I also found mention of a Hawaiian man who owned a plot in the valley in 1837. Furthermore, the agriculture teacher has a stone poi mortar which I presume was dug up there as well.

Here's a picture of a big refuse pile once located along the main road passing by. Dates to 1942 I think.
