Might not even the the right forum...

Can metal detectors hit on leaded glass?

I know the lead content was generally pretty low, but we got some smart folks here.

Side note-
I've also wondered about Geiger counters and uranium glass..

Don't know about lead glass popping on a metal detector, but I doubt it. The lead in the glass is not in metallic form so probably won't do anything.

I do know Uranium glass does respond to a Geiger counter, I've collected alot and did the measurements myself. The readings are very low, but they are detectable - just slightly above background radiation levels.

It won't be easy to use a Geiger Counter to locate uranium glass as even with the Geiger Counter in direct contact with the glass the radiation is very very low, only about twice normal background radiation.

I have used a black light to find Uranium Glass, it glows, very fun.

I have used UV as well. Very neat!
I do know that some of the early uranium glass was like 20%+!!
Wild...

Someone I hope to get permission from (digging on property) asked me about the leaded glass..

It's been in the back of my mind for weeks.

Not a dumb question, I've wondered about that also.

Good question. I'm guessing the answer is no.

During your bottle hunts, you probably have discovered some sites where people dumped old televisions and/or cathode ray tube-type computer monitors. Likely, some were subsequently shot to pieces (not pointing any fingers here). CRT glass is leaded glass. Grab a few chunks and bury it somewhere removed from the shreds of shadow mask and other metal debris associated with the shot-up dumping site and then see if you can get detector hits on the pieces.

That's my two cents worth, which happens to be how much I am willing to bet that the glass is not detectable by a consumer-grade metal detector should someone be willing to lay me fifty-to-one odds to the contrary.

The guy that asked me about it, owns lots of properties in the general area; one being one of the first homesteads in a near by town.

He said they've come across super old bottles digging on the lot, and at low tides.

I told him they were likely undetectable, but didn't know for sure.
