This is a bottle I found today and wondering how I go about finding out how old it is? It appears to have had a cork stopper. I took pictures of the front, bottom and neck (to show it didn’t have a screw on lid). I wasn’t able to clean it real well yet as I don’t have anything narrow enough to fit inside but plan to try some pipe cleaners. Thanks for any info

Looks to be about 1910's-1920's. It's an early machine-made bottle, you can tell due to the presence of the seam line running across the entire height of the bottle all the way to the top.

We can tell it's early 20th century and not later because despite being machine-made it also still uses a cork stopper and has embossing, both these features are holdovers from the 19th century and would become much less common as the new century progressed.

By the 1930's and 40's it was much less common in America for bottles to still be sealed with corks as other methods, such as screw cap technology, were more sanitary and reliable. Glass embossing was also largely replaced by paper labels and by the middle of the 20th century Applied Color Labels (ACL's) dominated.

Thank you very much for that very helpful information. We found this one in another area of our new property along with a larger brown one that had a cork stopper as well. Thinking this may have been an earlier “dump” as the other spot we found had the ACL bottles in it. So interesting to see these things. So far only really finding glass and a few soles from shoes. Wondering if the salt air down there pretty much destroyed anything else. As we find what we consider near pieces I’ll be posting some pics to help me learn timelines. Thanks again!

I'm still shocked to find the people through bottles, glass bottles out. I would think that would be something to keep because you can reuse them yes I learned.
