Aside from numerous sets of extra clothes and layers, how do y'all best mitigate freezing temperatures?

Even though the ground is somewhat frozen, I would like to get to some digging, relatively soon (hopefully before the next snow-dump).

I'm well versed at the art of layering (snowboarding), but I seem to get into a retard mode when really digging...

Before I realize it, I'm 100% winded and SOAKED!
Even worse, the more I get into it, the hotter I get, and continue to strip layers..
Bad news when the temps are below, or near freezing (and you're MILES out)...

Just curious as to "tricks of the trade" so to speak.

I kind of just deal with it, the more you dig and work the more you warm up. Planning to do some digging before a storm is predicted to come just before Christmas this year. I also wear a long sleeve shirt and my heavy digging jacket.

Lol. I get it...

But on more than one occasion, before i truly realize and comprehend the situation, I've stripped down to just pants at dangerous temps.

If I'm really getting into it, then I'm most likely off the charts lol.

I don’t get that cold as long as there’s no wind. Not so easy for a dump, but you can find ways. I’d imagine privies are much warmer.

A tiny bit of liquor keeps the belly warm...just kidding. ;)

Getting the body warm with tea/coffee/soup before going out in the cold always helps me maintain a higher core temp. Maybe bring an extra set or two of socks to dry your feet out regularly, and an extra pair of junk shoes if they can be afforded.

Been there, done that.

Some of the treks are risky enough sober lol.

If I was you I would definitely invest in merino wool it's the best for physical labor outdoors in winter if it gets wet from sweat you will still be warm ! I do not go bottle hunting without merino wool socks and gloves and hand warmers are awesome also !!

Go buy some Deep-Heat or Ben-Gay or similar products. Then rub it between your toes real good! When your feet sweat you'll get a nice warm feeling that lasts all day!
I used it for many years as an ironworker working high up in the sky when the only thing that stopped the cold wind was you blocking it!

Thank you so much for this idea man you may have saved my life I will let you know because the merino wool socks do work but no matter what I have on if I sit in one spot to long on a frigid day my toes start to get cold so I thank you so much for this idea!! To be honest the way this winter is going in maryland I don't think I am going to need much of anything it's 62°F right now !! No winter at all to speak of in maryland. We never even had a snow storm yet where I live
