Hi there Anthony. I haven't posted anything here is years. Time to change that,
LOVE the Jersey shore! Long time ago I "lived" in Jersey (3 weeks at a time--AT&T, Bedminster, Basking Ridge, Morristown--and returning "home" for a weekend to St. Louis...then back). I'm still in love with the...
Dug dumps and privies since 1972. I wouldn't waste time on this mid-20th century junk. Move on and keep looking for better material: older pottery/crockery, blown-in-mold bottle necks/lips, aqua glass, embossed shards. Shallow creeks, find the right shards, wade upstream, find the source. DIG.
Around here (Iowa) we call them "pillar dolls." Dug a lot of those in privies, mostly broken/trash. Have dug a few intact ones though, which lend credence to speculation that the outhouse also occasionally served as playhouse...and some dolls were (tragically) lost in the process. It's always...
The privy--"outhouse,"--which, to locate, will require an intuitive sense of proximate perspective relative to the structure, e.g., front and back, doorways. Equally important is a 3/8" spring steel probe; 4 feet will likely be adequate. Older pits are much more "subtle," given the relative lack...
That's some seriously exciting 40s-50s trash! It's a rush, right? I remember that feeling...So addictive. I hope you get into (or seek and find) an older trash pit or dump. Heaven!
Thanks, Harry for sharing Dumbrell's definitive referent standard: "A true 'mallet' has a shoulder to base diameter of less than one, A 'squat' cylinder has a ratio of greater than one."
Of course, I always repose in the wise words of a professor emeritus of Educational Philosophy (Policy...
Shard tragedy
Shard Tragedy.... For years I kept mid-to-late 19th century patterned china shards found while digging. I always intended to use the material to create "shard collage" art. I had two 5-gallon buckets full. I shared my vision with an artist friend who was also a professor at our...
Transitional Hutchinson, circa 1878-82, and definitely a unique plate orientation. Haven't seen any quite like that, which suggests that the glass company (unmarked base, correct?) was improvising with this bottle. Business directories from those years should confirm it. Value? While on the rare...
