Great finds Bram! I have never dove for bottles or pottery in a river but I have done many dives in local harbors. Digging in the mud can be cumbersome, dangerous and frustrating! Hopefully, you have enough current to clear what you stir up...otherwise it's lights out! I am used to diving in...
Again, you guys have come up with some really good ideas. I had been thinking about the cofferdam concept and Steve described a very workable alternative. Another idea might be a poly or fiberglass circular tank with the bottom cut out. We might have one laying around that I can use. If I was...
Hey Talyor, Nice job. I come across quite a few NY milk and cream bottles on my dives, but I don't bother to pick them up since they're not my thing and I wouldn't be able to make it to the surface with all the weight. I would rather leave them for the next guy to pick up. As far as cleaning...
Hey All,
I'm heading down from NY to Savannah GA and Tybee Island next week. Is anyone on the forum down that way? Would love to see someone's collection while I'm in that neck of the woods...
Let me know.
Thanks!

Some really good ideas guys! I think I'm more prepared to tackle this...now all I need to do is to find the time. As far as the vegetation I won't/don't have to mess with it. If and when I find something I will be sure to report back.
Chris
Does anyone have any advice as to how to find and get to bottles that may be sitting under a couple to several feet of wetland muck and peat that is walkable/hard on the surface? I have a site that I am sure will be a treasure trove given the 18th century homesites adjacent, but I'm not really...
GPR test update... PROS:GPR is very good at locating: tree roots, dog graves, buried cables, pieces of metal, buried coal ash layers...in all cases it shows the depth accurately. CONS:I was NOT able to get it to detect or show any signal for a modern wine bottle I buried 1ft down. I will have...

Hello, Welcome to the forum. Please see responses to my post about 2 weeks ago relating to "Early American Mallets" in the "What is it before 1900" thread. Here's the link to that thread: https://www.antique-bottles.net/forum/Early-American-mallets-m645730.aspx I purchased almost the EXACT...
UPDATE: I have taken some advice and searched previous threads on the Forum and found a little info, but not much that was useful. I did get out for very short time with the unit yesterday and spent a little time dialing in the scanning depth and trying to search a couple known targets. I was...
Thanks David...will do.
I didn't have to rent or buy. I have a friend in construction and this was in storage since no one knew how to use it. I can use as long as I want as long as eventually teach them how it works.
I will check out past threads.
I did try it briefly yesterday and got...
Hey Eric, Just me in my yard...once a scientist always a scientist I guess...a closet archaeologist is more like it. One trick that I use to dig...not sure if I'm the only one to think of this, but it seemed obvious to me after I couldn't find a strong enough plastic had trowel...is PVC cut at...
