Nice finds, I love to see UK stuff on here, the UK doesn’t seem to have the bottle discussion and show culture that the US has, or maybe I’m just missing something.
A guy in Sav with a nice collection of Ryans told me that most of them were made in Philadelphia and the war stopped the flow of bottles to the south, which didn’t start back up til after the war, thus no Ryans with wartime dates. Not sure how accurate that is.
stopped by a dump I hadn’t been to in a while, didn’t have much time to dig but the muskrats had these laid out for me already. Upjohn Phenolax (ABM), Armour’s Top Notch grape juice, BIM Illinois, ABM Illinois extract, and an interesting art pottery tile.
St Louis show was great, split a box of perfumes with the GF, and finally broke down and bought a local blob (Cairns, Block & Co.) for my collection after two years of looking for one in the wild, I find pieces occasionally but nothing close to whole, and it was a decent deal. I also enjoyed...
I’m not familiar with Alabama bottles but it looks around 1900-1910, and there may be more, it was common practice in the south to throw bottles under the house. Would be helpful if you knew when your house was built as well, county assessor will often have the info.
Found a bit more info, the company was listed as being incorporated in 1919, and was dissolved by act of the Massachusetts General Assembly in 1935. The dissolution act covered dozens, if not hundreds of companies.
Found an odd one yesterday, it’s a Garrity’s Everwave by L.M. Garrity & Co. of Boston. Seems they started making this hair curling product (an early leave-in conditioner) in 1921 as that’s when it was first advertised, in the July 6 Philadelphia Inquirer. The next advertisements I could find...
Hey y’all,
I was recently doing my top ten finds of 2022 roundup, and wanted to reference my Charles J Reuter hutch with the hutch book #, and I saw that there was no photo, so I sent a photo of mine to Ron, lo and behold, he said he hadn’t seen one since 2008.
I think we can sometimes be a...
Found my first sign today, some kind of measuring scale. It’s heavy as all get out and has porcelain on both sides. Saw one listed on eBay as an oil tank gauge but seems a bit overbuilt for that. It was on the Mississippi but in a dump layer.
Left looks like some pill bottles I’ve seen (new in box with pills) and right I’m guessing is a perfume? Any idea on the brand? Lots of Colgate and Hudnut products in this dump if that helps. Becoming a bit of a perfume historian and it’s fascinating.
