It could of been accessed easily but was very well concealed on the back wall where the transition from firebox to chimney was starting. One would have had to reach up and over the first row and remove a loose brick to access the space which was made by chiseling about half the brick away...

Cyberdigger I think you are on the right track. Obviously hidden, 1920's small bottle, dropper in reuseable rubber stopper. It all points to some sort of illicit substance and a faint smell of alcohol does emanate from from the liquid. Privyprowler I am curious as to what you are thinking...

Thanks to all who have replied so far. I was able to remove the stopper without damage. I don't think it is perfume as there was not even a faint scent of any kind. The liquid is odorless and red is about all i can determine right now. I siphoned about 2ml into a syringe for possible further...
