Dear experts I found this bottle yesterday scuba diving in Alor, Indonesia. It was very encrusted with marine growth but is now hopefully clean enough to age. The seal is A Van Hoboken and it has a very curved base and asymmetrical form. Can anyone help with its age and how rare it is. Thanks in advance.

Nice find! You can give this bottle an acid bath to get rid of the marine growth traces. White vinegar is a minimal start. You don't say if the bottle has a pontil scar, and I suspect it doesn't. A closer look at the lip would be useful. Based on what info we have, I'd guess the bottle dates to 1840-60.
Actually a very common name and bottle style for that particular gin or perhaps another alcoholic spirits. Some had an applied seal and some didn't. A sealed version adds a bit more value. The marine growth on yours, in my estimation adds, a very desirable uniqueness to your particular specimen and cleaning it would lessen its value. Even in mint condition, a specimen like yours would be around $75.00 +/-. I would agree with Mr. Pristis's date range. Van Denberg was also a prolific exporter of this style of bottle. Some bottles may be smooth based, pontiled, open style or fire polished and would be of similar or same age. These bottles have been found in about every country.

THIS is interesting sea growth. I think it is alright to leave a marine growth highlight, to demonstrate provenance, for example. Marine growth that obscures the details of the bottle is best removed. But, this is a disagreement of esthetics with no possible resolution.
