what basic tools and equipment would you suggest for a beginner. I will likely be exploring streams and ravines and the like. Too claustrophobic to be digging privies. Thank you

My first probe was an old piece of steel rod I wrapped ducktape around as a handle. It was only 2 feet long. I had a small screw driver and a garden shovel. I found nothing but garbage. Lol! I hope you find more than I did. I go search the banks of my river after storms. They have to be big enough to come up onto the road. Hurricane is usually a good one. I also look after winter too. Once I search an area if I find somethings, I always go search it at least 2 more times. I always get something I missed. Spring i find without all the leaves I can see and access areas of the under growth that I can't get into any other time of the year. Also I don't do poison ivy well so this helps. No bugs yet either.

Over the past year, I have really got into this hobby. But this summer in KY is the 17-year cicada session and I don't know how I will be able to get digging in. I use a screwdriver a serrated metal detecting hand shovel and your normal garden shovel.
