A few years ago folks, I dug this from a large city dump that has a lot of coal ash. The ash seems to do two things pretty well. Stain most glass (but strangely not all) and preserve paper labels somewhat well.

Here's a Guiness Extra Stout with multiple labels still legible (but not perfect)

The logo on that great survivor stands for E. & J. Burke, whose New York importing partnership was the biggest importer of Guinness into North America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thanks for sharing.
