Hi Relicraker, In respect of J. Bourne & Son, they were a large manufacturing pottery in Denby, Derbyshire in the UK. The retailer, P.J. Arnold of London are usually associated with ink. It's a relatively common bottle in the UK.

As Old Wiltshire explained, it's an ink bottle. From my own experience I've generally found them at sites dating from the 1890's - 1910's. People used alot of ink back then and they refilled their ink wells from these larger bottles. They're probubly the most common stoneware bottles out there. Still amazing to find them as they're from a very interesting time in history. A 32oz I dug, still with rubber cork:
