I think something similar showed up on the forum a while ago and people couldn't figure out what it was then either. I'm wondering if yours might be the glass from inside a thermos? It's definitely not what people refer to as "ballast bottles" (I don't know where the belief that they were carried as ballast came from) which were ginger ale bottles and made with very thick glass to withstand the pressure.
