    Where to dig??

---sigh---Hotte...Yep. ''Hot''. Married into that name. I had a decent and respectable Dutch surname before that, lol. Thanks for responding. I do intend to keep digging my current dump site, although my son and his girlfriend are so keen on digging with me that I have to wait until they...

    Where to dig??

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking that with the dug well where it is, they may not have put the privy too close for fear of contamination. We definitely get cold winters here, and I can't imagine having to trek through the snow to relieve myself in the dark! Hardy, those early folks...

    Where to dig??

Hi all you revered experts! I hope you can help me...I'm trying to guess the best place that the early household dump, or privy, would have been at my farm. Here's a pic from the air, fuzzy I'm afraid. I've labeled where the existing features are. The place where I marked Dump is where...

    Veterinary bottles and vials

Last pic. All the jars and bottles had rusted lids, which I broke away. Still some gross, greasy residue in a few of them, lol. Hope I didn't poison myself.---Mal

    Veterinary bottles and vials

Hello again. I cleaned up a few of the bottles from the barn area. One seems a bit older in that it is a cork top rather than a screw top, and is a light aqua colour, very bubbly. Hoping more oldies will turn up.

    Veterinary bottles and vials

Cool bottle! Here are a few close ups. The first is a Dr. Bell's Medical Wonder, which contained all kinds of horrible crap, and there are also Rawleighs and Pinex bottles, which were horse medicinals for cough and colic. Then all the vials. Geez: Gotta wonder if it was the horses or...

    Veterinary bottles and vials

Hi all. I have a spot beside my barn that showed a lot of shards. I dug down and found quite a few intact bottles, and dozens of these small screw cap vials. The bottles are mostly veterinary formulas for horses. I was wondering if anyone else has dug up these vials in such numbers? I'm...

    merchant lockport bottle

What do you suppose the approximate date is? The house from which it came dates to 1828, but i think the chimneys were a later addition.....mal

    merchant lockport bottle

thanks John--i wasn't sure if it was a pontil scar or not because it is not very prominent. Its edges are slightly raised, though.

    merchant lockport bottle

hello all This is the bottle my son found while dismantling an old chimney. Being a 13 year old, he is more interested in its worth than its intrinsic historical value. He wants me to put it in Ebay--so I was hoping for some reserve bid guidelines. Here's a couple of pics from my scanner...

C'mon now--bottle hunters can't be squeamish--think about privy-digging! Use that dowell to break up the dried remains and tap out the debris.

    bottle stoppers?

Thanks to all. My son found a G W Merchant bottle bricked in to a chimney of an early log house we are dismantling. The house is said to be of 1828 date, although the chimneys may have been built later, as they were for iron stoves. The bottle is very clean, aqua in colour and perhaps pontil...
