I too have found 1970s dumps and always do small test hole to be sure, especially if there are no other options and the surrounding area is old enough and if the dump is fairly mounded. I have found 1800s dumps buried under 1970s trash. One actually went into pontil era and produced early...
I dig SE and Eastern CT if it is a farm, a dump would be more likely to find. Check directly back from the back of the house, towards low areas or edge of fields, especially corners. Follow rock walls! Look for bulges or rock piles, look for evidence of broken glass or pottery and metal buckets...

What an amazing early Christmas gift this was for me on the 23rd! It is an early one too, coming out of a dump no newer than 1916 or so. Found more nice bottles too. This year has been a killer one for me, cannot wait to do the completion summary of the best bottles and stuff I have dug this...
