    Lens specifications recommendations?

Thank you! I will certainly look into that one

    Lens specifications recommendations?

Hi everyone. I'm working on my next cataloging book(s) about West Virginia bottles, as well as an eventual website with all of the images and details, but I wanted to upgrade my photography setup prior to taking dedicated trips to large collections. Right now, I am planning on investing in a...

Any West Virginia diggers? Preferably southern WV

Hey! So, I started graduate school in Cincinnati a little over a month ago so I'm not constantly in WV. I do come home around every two weeks and I'd love to go digging this fall and winter. Shoot me a message and let me know where you're headed to and we can work something out!

New bottle book out on embossed West Virginia crown top sodas

Hi everyone, I recently published a rarity guide on all known West Virginia embossed and paper label crown top sodas. That includes local bottlers, Kola Wars sodas, straight-sided Coca-Colas, and pre-standard Pepsis. It has images for the bottles where possible. At 288 pages, that means nearly...

A born-again collector here from Charleston, West Virginia!

Hi Al, I'm sorry to hear about why you were in West Virginia. Those are definitely unfortunate circumstances. I'd be very interested in you two coming to visit to go digging with me. The problem is that right now I don't have an area to dig at. When I do, you two will be the first to know...

Undiveable river: let's hear your ideas!

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all of the input here. The river had counter-erosion measures taken, so now (and for the past few decades) there have been large boulders placed on the steep banks. I may just take a walk down by the waterline to see if I see anything sometime soon, but I believe...

Undiveable river: let's hear your ideas!

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been on here in awhile. Conditions are murkier and muddier from the surface. Very steep banks with no way to get down to the water except by-way of the other river which connects to it. The water deepens quickly, from 2-3 feet to 8 feet within a couple yards...

Undiveable river: let's hear your ideas!

Possibly, that's a good idea. The problem is if it hits a snag, but I'll cross that bridge once I get to it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Undiveable river: let's hear your ideas!

Thanks guys. Unfortunately it's consistently too deep to wade and in an urban center. I'll look for a calmer area where they might have settled, wasn't sure of how they might get tossed around in there. It's a large river, definitely not walkable.

Undiveable river: let's hear your ideas!

I posted once about a river near my home that is entirely undiveable--or only safe for trained search and recovery divers. There's a ton of boat traffic, a decent current, and very little visibility. Some people suggested getting a long clam rake and going out on a boat to scrape the bottom. I...

West Virginia Colas: Copy cats, Cokes, and Pepsis! & Southern West Virginia sodas

Hey everybody, I'm still looking for West Virginia bottles but I figured I'd make another listing. I'm looking for all West Virginia colas. This includes "copy cats" like Celery=Cola, Rye-Ola, Chero-Cola, Limeola, everything, straight sided Cokes and pre-standardization Pepsis. In addition, just...

    Mason's Patent Nov. 30th 1858 reproduction or not? C

Thank you! That's all great information. This is the only jar I've owned so this is super helpful.

    Mason's Patent Nov. 30th 1858 reproduction or not? C

How do I determine if the lip is ground? Around the lip (on the inside) the glass is rough and sticks inwards some. I wasn't sure if that was from the lid or manufacturing.

    Mason's Patent Nov. 30th 1858 reproduction or not? C

So, I've had this jar for probably ten-something years. I've never been big on jars so I've been trying to get rid of it, but I have no idea if it's real or not (I don't want to rip somebody off), as I read that a lot of reproductions were made in China in the 2010s. I can't find this exact...

Best way to find bottles that were dumped in a deep, muddy river?

Unfortunately not. Employment isn't the talk of the town in West Virginia right now--clam rakes and kayaks aren't too cheap! I have mapped a ton of places lately using KMZ overlays and historical documents in my time off, though. Waiting for the temperature to cool down so some of this...

    West Virginia

Hey, I haven't been on here in awhile but I'm in West Virginia. I'm not too familiar with digging spots in Northern WV, but I'd gladly do some research and get something going if you wanted to. I mostly keep to Southern WV and have a lot of unscouted spots if you were to make that 2.5 hour...

Best way to find bottles that were dumped in a deep, muddy river?

Hey Will, good to see you drop back in! I hope things are progressing with your situations and a resolution to all of those misfortunes are in sight. Great ideas with using a pike pole or boat hook to extend the length of the clam rake. It'd definitely be best to use something made of PVC, as...

Is ‘mud treading’ commonplace in the USA?

Sorry, I'm late to this discussion but I can speak on the depth/clarity of the Monongahela River as someone who has visited friends at WVU quite a bit. First, the river is at an average depth of 20 feet, so not quite walkable. It's also very, very muddy as most rivers in WV are, so diving would...

Best way to find bottles that were dumped in a deep, muddy river?

Genius idea! Thank you. Now just to find one long enough.

Best way to find bottles that were dumped in a deep, muddy river?

I met a forum member through here--and older digger--from another state that's been helping me with mapping technology and looking at spots with me that I've picked out. I'm sure there are some lurkers on here or they just didn't see it, you're right. It's probably a matter of finding something...
