stopped by a dump I hadn’t been to in a while, didn’t have much time to dig but the muskrats had these laid out for me already. Upjohn Phenolax (ABM), Armour’s Top Notch grape juice, BIM Illinois, ABM Illinois extract, and an interesting art pottery tile.
St Louis show was great, split a box of perfumes with the GF, and finally broke down and bought a local blob (Cairns, Block & Co.) for my collection after two years of looking for one in the wild, I find pieces occasionally but nothing close to whole, and it was a decent deal. I also enjoyed...
Found an odd one yesterday, it’s a Garrity’s Everwave by L.M. Garrity & Co. of Boston. Seems they started making this hair curling product (an early leave-in conditioner) in 1921 as that’s when it was first advertised, in the July 6 Philadelphia Inquirer. The next advertisements I could find...
Hey y’all,
I was recently doing my top ten finds of 2022 roundup, and wanted to reference my Charles J Reuter hutch with the hutch book #, and I saw that there was no photo, so I sent a photo of mine to Ron, lo and behold, he said he hadn’t seen one since 2008.
I think we can sometimes be a...
Found my first sign today, some kind of measuring scale. It’s heavy as all get out and has porcelain on both sides. Saw one listed on eBay as an oil tank gauge but seems a bit overbuilt for that. It was on the Mississippi but in a dump layer.
Left looks like some pill bottles I’ve seen (new in box with pills) and right I’m guessing is a perfume? Any idea on the brand? Lots of Colgate and Hudnut products in this dump if that helps. Becoming a bit of a perfume historian and it’s fascinating.
Picked up a pretty nice decanter collection for $5. First one is extremely thin and has pontil plus tong marks on the neck. Second is newer but has a beautiful cut equestrian scene. Both have handwritten labels by the same person, one label is marked 1961, perhaps date of acquisition.
Found this Wetter in the River a few weeks ago, it was wedged in some piece of machinery atop a later dump. I almost wonder if it was machinery from the bottler, only about 1/4 mile away. Anyway, it has a bad crack and damage to the lip, plus it’s an extremely common bottle, so I’m using it as a...
Tried putting this into google every way I could think of, I’m trying to find some pictures of hutch or blob soda bottles either on display or in-use circa 1890-1910. Found plenty of pictures of soda fountains from that period, but no bottled products other than jars behind the counter...
Or barber bottle? Not very good with these. Has surname “Audenlien” on one panel, otherwise I would’ve passed it by as modern middle-eastern glass.
Also found a repro Fislerville Jenny Lind at the same thrift, $7.50 for everything, very happy.
I found this piece a few months ago in Gravois Creek near Grant’s Farm (well clear of the site/park) but I’ve never figured out what it was. It’s the only piece I’ve ever kept from my 5+ trips to various parts of the creek, And has that nice ground base. Maybe part of a decanter or bowl?
The site where I found the first Hygrade turned out another today, this one has the extra fleur-de-lis and the Illinois diamond on the base. From my research, all Hygrade bottles, at least til they switched to the art deco design, were made at Illinois’ Streator factory, not sure exactly why the...
Went to my 10s-20s dump today and pulled these guys out, couldn’t believe it when I pulled out the Peychaud’s, it’s machine made but happy with anything pre-pro! The Listerine cleaned up really well and is decorating my bathroom now, it’s the nicest one I’ve found, and I’ve found many. Kept the...
Found this one today, top’s gone but I’d never seen one before. Thought it was the Anheuser-Busch logo at first but it’s two Easter lilies. Any insight?
Did some scouting today and found two dumps within 30ft of each other, on opposite banks of the creek. The first one had been dug somewhat, but had a lot of untouched areas, I didn’t have a shovel though. Second dump had most of these bottles, all buried in hardpack mud and iron oxide.
Left to...
