I am new to bottle collecting, but have glass and bottles from various glass shops from around South Jersey. I came across this bottle, which I had forgotten I had. I thought someone might be interested in seeing it. It is a sample Lysol bottle dated 4/24/39. The bottom plate was hand engraved...
I know this is from 2018, but I was wondering how Mattypo made out in his quest to find molds for making blown bottles. I’ve been involved in engraving the dies (slug plates) for various glass houses including, Clevenger Glass, Pairpoint, Wheaton Arts, Millville Art Glass and a few others. I now...
Thanks for the reply RED. I see your point. The question was poorly worded and cryptic. The reason I asked is because I am an engraver. My father and I used to do the engraving for Clevenger Glass, after Jim Travis took over. I haven't seen the sort of bottles that Clevenger used to do...
Just out of curiosity, would there be any interest in bottles that are hand blown from molds, with the design hand engraved as it was done the old fashion way, like Clevenger and companies prior to they use to do it?
Thanks to everyone for the replys to a question that I'm sure is asked quite often. Sounds like it started a lot of people pondering what is considered antique. It very was helpful and nice to know that in the future I'll have a reliable source to go too when it comes to my many questions.
How times have changed.... Our kids and E-bay are a good judge of what has gone by the wayside. Like the rotary phone that most kids wouldn't know how to use. I guess I'm officially an antique as of last June. I'll have to start looking around my grandfather's old bar for some antiques. If...
Plumbata: To answer your question about Clevenger Glass, they are no longer in business. It weird that you've sent this post because I've just recently become a member, within the last 2 weeks. If go back to last week I put a post up about doing this sort of work since my father and I did most...
Glass Man: On the subject of the cabin mold, I wish I could give an exact time period of when the cabin was done. The time period sounds right, but I couldn't give you an exact year. Harry Bearings who sells alot of Clevengers glass at his http://www.sweetdreamscreations.net website might be a...
Hey Cap: Thanks for taking a look at my site. To answer your question, I have 4 car plates; a 1909 Packard, 1953 and 1935 Corvette, and 1933 Duesenberg. If you were to order a new plate and suncatchers, it is about a 3 week turnaround. This being a bottle forum, I guess it would be best if...
Cowseatmaize: The type iron that molds are made of is cast iron. Most anything else is to hard or brittle and peels rather then chips, as cast iron does, which dulls the chisel. Some people use graphite, however it is harder to get real fine detail in your picture, it is much dirtier, and...
lobeycat: I wouldn't consider making a copy of an antique bottle and trying to sell it as such. That would be unethical. The only thing I do with the slug plates (inserts) that I have, is use them to make suncatchers. Of the plates I use to make suncatchers, I engrave my initials on the...
Being new to this forum, I'm not really sure how to reply to everyone at once. Therefore I will take answer one question at a time.
KentOhio- I remember seeing someone selling the slug plate, what I call an insert, on EBAY. I have many, including those that were used to make cup plates. I...
Thanks for the replying to my post. I can assure everyone that I have no intentions of reproducing any bottles as originals. My credibility is most important to me. As for the engraving, if you look closely, alot of the bottles made by Clevenger, especially when they are done as commemorative...
Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and looking for some input. I'd like to get some opinions on how people feel about reproductions and new bottle designs. I'm an engraver by trade. My father and I engraved 99% of the plates used to make Clevengers bottles from the time Jim Travis took over in...
