I was wondering if anyone knows about a jar I have come across, on one side it has
Mason
Patent
and on the other side it has
Port
which looks like it is a signature type- like handwriting not printed.
The jar looks clear but you can see some blue in it.
I don't seem to be able to find anything on Port.

Thanks,
VIRGINIA

Hi Virginia,
I did find in the Red Book of Fruit Jars #9 a "Mason's Patent 1858"
Reverse: PORT (in script)
Smooth lip Mason shoulder seal

Half Gallon, Pint, Aqua....... $12-15
Quart, Aqua.......................$5-7

Does this sound like your jar????

Hi Virginia, I don't know how much more information you might be interested in, but your jar was made by the Port Glass Co., with manufacturing plants in Indiana and Illinois. It is a machine-made jar, hence the smooth lip and dates to the early 1900's. Ball later (around 1908 maybe - I don't have my Standard Reference right here) bought out the Port Glass Co., and continued to use the same molds recutting the "Port" on the back to read "Ball". You can always see the ghosted "Port" through the Ball script. Happy collecting! -Tammy
