I'm a bottle guy and know nothing about jars, so I figured I'd ask a few questions of all the jar experts here about this mason jar I picked up this morning. It's a one pint, aqua "Mason's Patent Nov. 30th, 1858", with the embossed maltese cross. The base is embossed "44" in the center, with "Pat Nov 6 67" in a circle around the "44". It has a ground lip (with a small chip) and came with a beat up tin screw on cap and a white cap liner that says "Boyd's Genuine Porcelain Liner".

First, can anyone tell me approx age of this jar, and if the cap and liner are correct for this jar? Did I do well for $5.00??

Also, they had a similar one quart jar that was the same, except instead of the embossed cross, it had a three letter monogram on it. They were asking $25 for that. Should I go back for that one? Thanks in advance!

Hi treasurekidd, from what I can tell by your pics, your jar does not have any letters in the cross { some do & some don't} The base should read ...pat Nov. 26 67 {perhaps the 2 is worn on your jar} It appear's to have the correct lid, there are a few variations. From what I can tell, your jar has a value of $4-6. When it comes to the Mason's Patent Nov. 30th 1858 jars it can get confuesing because there are so many variables such as apostrophe's, periods, weather or not there is a th after 30, ghosted lettering, things of that sort. Which all determine value. You have a nice jar, moneytary value is secondary, it's the history of the jars and the technology of the time period that make them so cool. The fact that they are worth money is just iceing on the cake, an added bonus you might say. Yes!!! I would go back and get the other jar if the price is reasonable. Just my opinion though, that decision is yours. I hope I was of some help to you and thanx for sharing your great little piece of American history.
