Yes, it is a repro. All bottles that have Wheaton, NJ embossed on the bottom are repros. They are still collectable though, I frequently see them on eBay and people bid on them. Some price guides even have a section for repro bottles. I like the root beer extract you posted. The pontiled ones are pretty decent to have, I have not personally seen a pontiled one but I know they're out there, the machine made ones are pretty common.

sorry but there are not any pontiled hires bottles out there. What you have is a "machine scar" - I've seen some hires that look very close to pontiled, but are machine made...

I guess that explains why I've never seen one, I have heard that they exist but I checked and could not find a listing for one. Matt, thanks for setting me straight.

I think your bottle mark is a baffle valve used in the baffle over the blank for the settle blow air. But that was only done on press and blow bottles. and I doubt that your bottle was made that way - being square. I would need to see the whole bottle. RED M.

looking at your picture it does look like a pontil... how a pic of the lip and a clear pic of the base? If I remember correctly the Hires co was not around before the 1870's but I could be wrong...
