Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me out. I know very little about pot lids and recently purchased one called "The Boar Hunt" at an auction. The only information I've been able to find on the internet values this pot lid at $2000 - $2500!!! I've never been that lucky so know there must be a catch somewhere. How do I know if this is a valuable lid or perhaps a later version or reproduction? The pot lid is framed and measures about 5" across. The frame backing appears very old and I do not want to remove it unless necessary. Attached is a photo. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi NUBPots, You will need to re-attach that photo.... These do turn up on ebay. Atleast thats where I bought mine. Never seen one in a frame though? I would be taking it out and checking the edges for damage.

These come is a few different boarders:- doule line black, gold rim, pink surround. There was a collection in CA recently were one of these and a Washing Crossing the Delaware sold. Was this yours???? This is my favourite lid. Great big thing. Unfortunately the Buffalo Hunt has been reproduced in the form of a b+w transfer over plain lid. Beware of these.

Cheers!

G'day NUBPots

The deantiques website has listings of pot/pratt lids - is this your item?

http://www.deantiques.com/PLG/images/Pratt/the_boar_hunt.jpg

Was yours purchased from Ebay in the last couple of weeks, as there was some discussions about the collection of lids and the quality of the photos and colours on this forum and the UK Bottle Forums.

Are you able to post a clear picture of your lid?

Cheers,

Hi, Sorry about the confusion with the picture. When in doubt read the directions! I've resized the picture and hope this turns out better.

NUBPots You may find the following links usefull. Very hard to determine origionality without handling. To start I would check the 12 oclock area of the inside rim.

Hi again,

Thought it would be worthwhile to include a picture of the back of the framed picture. The backing appears very old but if it is necessary to remove it to verify the authenticity and determine the value I guess it will need to be done. I checked the Repos section of the http://www.deantiques.com/PLG/repro_gallery.htm website and compared the "Boar Hunt" reproduction to the original and am still confused. I believe mine has the crispness of the original in may areas but perhaps not in others...or maybe it's just the quality of the picture. Anyhow, I'd still appreciate any help or advice you can offer.

Thanks,

Hi Gidday,

I just visited the deantiques.com site and posted photos of the back of my framed pot lid before I read your post. So you think I should remove the backing to check for the holes at 12:00? I will trust your good judgement.

Thanks, again.

OK, I couldn't stand not knowing and finally removed the backing. I was very relieved not to find the holes at 12:00. The lid back is quite dirty (could be a good sign) and has a 3 cm. chip on the back flange at 7:00. There don't appear to be any other major flaws however there are two superficial slight cracks on the back (don't show on front). Attached is another picture.
