Hutchinson bottle question..

I dug this clear/sun colored amethyst hutch in a 1880's dumpsite. It has the original stopper which has deteriorated a little but the strange thing is that there is no embossing. I have not dug many hutches in my area, and was wondering if the unembossed ones are common? Talk about a bummer for me. It's like digging a blank belt plate.

Hey VA,
Yea. It happens all of the time. Sorry. There were a lot of blanks blown. Probably when glass orders were down, or if they had extra glass at the end of a batch, they made them. It allowed for inventory ready for immediate shipment that could be sent to any bottler anywhere. The bottler then used a paper label to advertise the contents (and their business). (I imagine that original paper label hutches will draw the big bucks).

The good news is that they are still collectible. Some people specialize in blanks. Others will seek them out because of the glass manufacturer or color. The bad news is that it will not get top dollar because no-one now knows where it came from. In my experience, it's far harder to find a blank than an embossed hutch. So, in some ways, you found a rare one (if that's any consolation).

Thanks for the info; I have dug quite many broken ones, but this was my second complete one; the glass is thick and it's the thickest bottle I have yet; so if there is a major earthquake one of these El Nino days, it may be my only bottle left!

The first one i ever dug was slick(aqua) have not dug another since, all have been embossed ,bet your next one is embossed .

I like blank hutches. As Bob said, you just don't see them all that often compared to embossed ones. I have only dug one myself, but it's kind of special- It is brilliant citron green with the 10-sided "mug" base. ~Jim

In nearly 40 years of digging and collecting I have only dug two so I would say they are rare in my area for sure. They were usually blown for new customers while the waited for their slug plate or dedicated mold to be made.

I was given a fairly nice Western-blown applied lip hutch many years ago, but I don't feel it's worth much even if it is relatively rare.
Kind of like the etched variants of embossed hutches are usually quite rare, but no one wants them...
