what do you look for when gathering bottles?

Im a new guy to this and i dont really know what to look for when it comes to identifying bottles or their significance i have a whole crate but i dont know how to start. if anyone could point me in the right direction that wolud be great. thanks.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum but not to bottle collecting. There are
alot of web sites to find information on bottle types and rarity.
Also there are great books out there with lots of information
on all types of bottles and glass. A good one and it's been around
for years is American Glass by George and Helen McKearin.
You can get this book cheap on ebay and it's a great resource.
Also past auction catalogs are good barometer for bottles.

what do you look for when gathering bottles?

Most collect what they like, can find and afford. Some dig, some buy and trade and some do all three. Some specialize and some don't but we all love our glass. It doesn't take to long to figure what to keep but some keep everything.

Cyber Charlie collects everything so you had better hurry. I think he just bought everything in two states.[

This is a good jumping off point to get familiar about what people look for, and what you will want to consider, plus you must ask yourself "What interests me?"

For me and my wife, we are pretty much poison bottles only, mostly from the U.S. but we have a few from across the pond. We do this for 3 reasons. 1) We collect skulls, and many poison bottles have the skull and crossbones on them. 2) Design and visual appeal. 3)the size. Most poisons are from 2 - 6 inches tall. Can have many and not take up a lot of space.
It is definitely easier to specialize in 1 or 2 categories then be a generalist. There are volumes of information out there and you cant possibly read or know it all (not to mention afford to buy all the books)
