Hi all. Can anyone give me info on this 6" tall cylinder - looks to be 1870ish - possible iron pontil on base, though no iron residue remains.

Sorry - no pix - if it's crucial to providing info I'll try to take and attach, though I'm pretty much a technological dolt (and proud of it).

I know that it's a citrate of magnesia bottle. I had one around somewhere but I can't find it. There are pontiled and smooth based versions.

I lied; I could find it. Mine is smooth based, but it's a deepish kick-up that could be mistaken for an iron pontil. I think the pontiled ones were open pontil.

Thanks all. Amblypygi, that's the exact one I got (antique store in Durango, Colorado - neat place). Like yours, mine has a moderate kick up that makes me think it might have been iron pontiled.

Any idea of value?

Not a lot of value, probably worth about $10. The pontiled ones are worth a bit more but none of them are really rare. Colored citrate bottles can be big bucks, but not the aqua ones.

Hmmmm . . . I paid $20 for mine . . . that's why I'll never be a successful businessman.

Ahh, 10, 20, it's all in the same ballpark. If you like the bottle then you didn't do badly. I see it like I used to see our shipboard poker games when I was in the service: some days I'd win 20 bucks or so, other days I'd lose, but to me it didn't matter because I loved to play and 20 bucks seemed like a fair price to me for the entertainment. Bottles strike me as the same thing; if you like a bottle, then it's worth what you paid as long as you haven't gone crazy and paid $400 for a Duffy's Malt Whiskey [:D]

You mean $400 for a Duffy's is too much???!!! Shoot - there I go again . . .

Were you Navy or Coast Guard? I've done both - Navy 1985-89, Coast Guard 1994-present.
