Meat Juice?

Hi Ya'll. Gotta cute little teardrop shape bottle. The embossment reads "Valentines Meat Juice". It stands 3 1/4" tall. Was this used as a flavoring similar to Worcestershire? Are they pretty common? As always, any information is always appreciated. Came out of a pit abandoned in 1890. Thank you, Kelley

I've dug only a couple of them over many years and I agree, they seem to come out of trash from the 1890's. They are certainly cute! I think thery are a lot scarcer than most people think. Nice find!

I have the impression that this sort of preparation (and there are a number of them) is a dietary supplement, perhaps even invalid food.

Here is in part what Betty Zumwalt has to say about Valentine's Meat Juice:

"Trademark issued in 1876 for a compound of meat juice and glycerine to Mann S. Valentine of Richmond. VA....

"By 1932 the listing appears under patent medicines only. The product was originally touted for use in sickness, but also as an article of food."

She figures this bottle (which came in various sizes) as "common."

Thanks guys, It makes sense that it was originally used for sickness as it was pulled from a hospital pit that was in use from 1875 to 1890.

Hello all,
We replied to this same question last Feb. Do a search here w/ a 1 year time frame and you should see the results. This is a common bottle from my area in Va., and huge caches of these have been found. They are neat though and also found in a screw top minus the Valentine's, reading only "meat juice". One sold on eBay a while back, w/ a label, which is triangular, for an unbelievable $20. Many local collectors went into shock. [

The only ones I've seen were amber, but I haven't seen any of the later ones.

Nice little coincidence-I just dug one of these for the 1st time about a month ago and knew nothing about it-its another one of those cool little bottles thats not terribly rare but has a lot of "personality"-like Rumfords or Laxol...J.D
