Your posts on John Frederick Amelung were so interesting to me that I went to the library last night and reserved two books on Amelung Glass. I should have them shipped to my library by Monday. I look forward to learning more. I was wondering if you may know who may have made the large green medicine phial below ( 1.25 inches wide, five inches tall). Circa 1790. I got this from Chris (Baltbottles) last summer.
Hey Marc,Your bottle has the red orange tint I speak of in the pontil from the looks of your picture.Amelungs glass blowers seemed to employ a method of dipping the pontil rod into the red soil in a bucket or clay mug. This reddish orange residue is prevelant on quite a few amelung pieces. The date 1790 Chris or yourself assigned to your bottle puts it right in Amelungs hey day.Chris is good at dating privys so if he said 1790 it is pretty acurate give or take 5 years either way.Nice bottle definatley colonial American made.Good luck with your research glad to have sparked some interest.Hey if it isnt Amelung, then its Stiegel or Wistar made which would not make it too shabby.[]
