Had a pretty rare Ginger Beer on auction on Bid or Buy.co.za - a local franchise auction site. Put it on at R350 (about $50) and had the excitement of watching 19 last minute bids push it up to R1535 ($220+). This is the bottle :
There are some 550+ South African ginger beers and they have been rated (reasonably accurately) on a scale of A (very common) to F (only a few known). This, needless to say, was an F and several collectors were anxious to get their hands on it ! I could easily get addicted to this !
Hi Cyber. Yes, you're right about TV ! I always enjoy Joe's intro. of TV being educational, because he goes off and opens a book when someone switches on ! Remember, TV was only really introduced in SA about 1968 or so. I started teaching English in 1970 and it was painful to watch the influence it had on the kids I taught. [:-]
The Galtee More patent was a way of closing the bottle. There was a hole in the blob top and a pin passed through into the cork. Here's a photo showing the hole -
Actually it's been a pretty good weekend, with very pleasing sales at the flea market I do every weekend. There were a number of German tourists, which always boosts things for me. Three young students bought 5 pot lids at +- R250 each ! And I sold gadzillions of little clear bottles to two people who frame them, fix them around mirrors etc! This is what my stall at the market looks like:
Wow man, that's a bottle show-quality setup at a ..flea market..! Are there other bottle vendors selling at this magnitude?
Also, thanks for the explanation about Galtee More.. and the patent.. running a stick through the lip and cork is one way to keep it sealed up, one I never would have dreamed of seeing until now.. very weird, very cool.. F++ []
Hi, Cyber. Phew, I needed that sleep; two days out in the South Easter wind at my advanced age !! LOL. It's a very nice flea market. Some 260 stalls, mainly bric a brac and not too much commercial stuff. I'm the only resident " bottle specialist" ! But bottles and such like regularly pop up on other tables. Many of the dealers go to regular auctions and buy up job lots which may include the odd bottle, medicine pot etc. I've picked up some good things from the tables, including the ginger beer which went through the roof last night.
What's also useful is that, as I've been there for quite a while & become established, people will stop & say : "I've got some bottles, a box of bottles - even a whole collection of bottles ! Are you interested in buying ?"
I always follow up and on one occasion went round to an elderly couple's house. The gentleman took me through to the garage and it was all I could do not to shout "Holy Crap !!". It took me two trips with my truck and trailer to cart the whole collection home !! Ginger beers, case gins, some pot lids, lots of bottles & masses of stoneware.
Mind you it's not always like that - the majority are just a batch of little clear bottles, sometimes modern ketchup bottles etc ! But every now & then .... wow !
