Well things are thawing out in Maine and my son and i hiked along the river poking around for bottles etc for 6 hours Sunday. This was our most interesting find and if what I'm reading is correct it's between 177 and 183 years old? Does that sound right? It's a bit larger around than a quarter is.

I'm reading it's a pre prohibition porcelain? beer cap? that would have had a cork in it. It seems very odd it would still have the lettering on it after that much time in the river.

[font="verdana,arial,helvetica"]WALSH & CO. / DISTILLERY DISTRIBUTORS / 1828-1834 WASHINGTON STREET / BOSTON MASS.

I have found a few mentions of Walsh & Co of Boston, always with these dates.

I'm pretty sure you're mistaking the street address number with the date, 1828-1834 is the actual address numbers...Jim

I had found this photo online. Was a pretty fun find, I never saw one before.

I see this type, in photo below, all the time along the river but never knew what they were. The ones I've seen had no writing.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that it's the cork top to a whiskey jug. Just the fact that it says distillery makes it whiskey or bourbon related. It could also be a cork to a bottle, but I'm betting there is a stenciled jug out there somewhere with that same name and address on it.

Thank you all for the information. This is certainly the place to find people who know their stuff :) I came here to ask why the date seemed so wrong and ended up oogling the bottles everyone has been finding. This place gives me terrible bottle envy. I love it.
