The side pontil rod was connected to a tripod, so the glass blower could take his time and use both hands to work on the finish... []

You see, the pontil mark on this one is to the edge of the base.. so that when suspended from the ceiling of the glass house, it would hang at an angle, allowing the glass blower to attach the wire hasp more easily.
