I went and googled "Cornfield meet" I had supposed it was a more well known term, and seems as though it's not... So to clarify I pasted this segment of a letter found online. This explains it as well as I could.[;)]

"As I understand it, there used to be a whole industry where traveling showmen would stage head-on-collisions between junk locomotives, until there were a number of fatalities among spectators, and a stop got put to it. I doubt many of these staged wrecks were ever filmed."
