Anyone have any ideas on what this bottle is?

It stands about 5 inches tall, the base width and length are both about 3 3/4 inches.
The weird thing is that the neck is off set! On one face of the neck is embossed:
"L D. PATENTED JULY 4TH 1871" Which is both cool and frustrating because its tough to find US patent info before 1872 [:(] Its also a weird piece because even with such a huge neck, the seam stops at its base.

Any ideas appreciated. Thank you.

That embossing looks faint enough that there could be more & maybe it just looks like whittling now...do you think it would be worth holding paper up to each side & going over it with charcoal to see if anything else shows up? I forget what they call that...[8|]

sorry folks for the super large pics [8|]
some how there still under 200 k though [:)]

Someone told me they thought this was a master ink,
which would be *great*, but I've never seen a master ink
anything like this, has anyone?
Such a large neck doesn't seem practicle for pouring...

Greenpoison...

How about a "bud" vase or some kind of holder for a single rose or flower? It looks like whatever purpose it was made for, they needed a very stable base to keep it from falling over or for balance?[8|]

Thank you all for your help![:)]

poisons4me: I didn't know there were batteries in the 1870's... learn something every day. Is there a name for this type of poison bottle? btw - the neck is 1 5/8" x 1 5/8 inches.

Batteries have been found dating back to the romans and before, you can make one work, fill to line (or bend in neck) with sulphuric acid and finish with distilled water, insert 2 lead plates-1 on each side of opening(cannot touch) and a wire off the top of each and presto-voltage (not much but there none the less, farmers put them in series,i found 12 in a wooden crate rig one time and still have 3.He used it for the fence..happy new year
