A few months ago I picked up a jar from a guy at a yard sale. He said he found it in a barn here in Kentucky. I knew it was a good jar because it had an iron lid. The jar was unmarked, and the lid had a fresh coat of black paint on it. I didn't think much about it, because I no longer collect jars. Recently, curiosity got the better of me, and I scraped and wire-brushed the paint off the lid. After about two months of picking and brushing, I realized I was holding a 'WILLIAM HALLER PAT'D AUG 7 1860' jar lid. Now, my question is, if I try to sell it, will it lose much value having the rust removed? The writing is very, VERY difficult to read, but with a little effort it can be made out.
I would very much like to sell it, but want to make sure I am getting the best money for it.

WOW.....what ever you do.....DO NOT clean it...that is a GREAT and scarse lid....let the buyer make that decision....and if it the one pictured....it does not look bad at all....

Do ya have a picture of the jar by chance? VERY good find by the way....

Original closures for turn of the century jars are so uncommon, folks want them in any condition. Rusty, or wire brushed is fine with me. Given the choice, I personally would not want a fresh coat of paint on it, so in my opinion you didn't devalue it...in fact it looks like you did a meticulous job. North American Glass is the on-line auction house for the jar community, so Greg would be your best bet for top dollar. One last thing, does a magnet stick to it?

I can post pics of the jar after work this afternoon. I had to clean the paint and rust off before I could even tell the jar lid said anything at all. It is very iron, and magnets stick to it quite well.

My Wife and I were once very avid jar collectors and have had and still have some very scarce to rare jars. There is nothing better than an original lid with a fair amount of the original black paint but I would myself clean a lid with new paint or heavy rust. I might add that I am a stickler for originality and that should be retained whenever possible but when the damage has already been done by others I take the least corrective steps possible to get a pleasing appearance. It sounds as though you have done that and I would be happy with it.. Just don't go further like clear lacquer.

Close up of the lid. You can barely make out "William" on the right side of the pic. The left side was the area of heaviest rust. With some scrutiny you can make out "Haller" on the lid, but I can't get it to show up in a pic.

Bottom side of lid. Area of heaviest rust corresponds with the heaviest rust on the top.
