My mom recently drove up from Tennessee by herself to be with us at Thanksgiving, at 84 she does pretty good. She had been to Winterthur but it was years ago and I had never been so we took the leisurely hour plus drive up Route 1 to Wilmington to get there.

For those who have never been there, if you are ever in the area its a must see. Owned by one of the Duponts this man was far sighted and amassed arguably the greatest collection of Americana ever assembled, knowing that he would leave it one day as a museum to the public. This place has stuff that would make the Smithsonian drool, I'm not kidding some of the finest furniture, paintings. porcelain, you name it. There are also extensive gardens and all kinds of exotic and native plants and trees planted in extensive gardens that you can take a half hour tram tour through.

My mom really enjoyed the house tour that she said my Dad couldn't wait to get out of year's ago[:D]. At this season its a yuletide tour with many rooms decorated for Christmas spanning various decades.

The amount of artifacts there is nothing short of amazing, the are seperate museums in addition to the 9 story, 175 room mansion he built to house the collection. Whole houses from various parts of the country were moved there and reconstructed.

There is also an extensive research library there. He was big into the founding fathers especially Washington and there are several original paintings as well as George and Martha's china, etc on display. My 14 yr old is bugging me to let her on facebook[:'(] so I'm ending this thread put later I'm putting one up showing the great redware and mochaware display they have there.

let's not go overboard They just have all their good stuff squeezed into one spot...

There is at least two good spots (My antique store, duh)...

Plus I've been through Western Md on my way to Pittsburgh, one good spot is better than cheap hotels and gas stations.
