I wrote to ebay and got no response, of course. The seller did respond to my message to it, that the jar is a well known and recent reproduction. The sellers response is attached, Item# 170823238642.
I am posting this message so that any forum members, who are new to jar collecting, will not be stung by this fake listed as antique. George

Wow, what a nice person! [8|]

I sent her a very level-headed message as well. Hopefully after she gets enough messages she will take the hint.

I concluded the message with:

"The buyer might not know it is a common reproduction, but God knows, and is watching you closely."

I'd like to see what kind of reply, if any, I get. [:D]

It is not stupid at all. Many experienced jar collectors have been fooled by the fakes that are common on the bay.
This one is easy, however. There are not any authentic cobalt MASON'S 1858s that have a smooth lip. This particular reproduction comes in several wild colors. It comes in pint and quart. The quarts all have the number 7 on the base. The pints have 44. One of the many reasons that collectors should have a copy of the RED BOOK is the list of known fakes that is in the book.

They're listed by Doug Leybourne is good enough for me and I looked at the pictures. The lip is smooth from the conveniently blurred pictures and the base # 7 are the biggest giveaways. It's a repro.

Sorry George, that's what happens when I open a reply, start typing, get distracted by the cat, go outside, come back in and do something else and then finish. I end up being redundant.[]

I looked at the picture. smooth lip to me. Not even a tiny spot of wear on bottom (for something that old??). I got it. I think somebody got to do something about this, before some one get stung.

I asked a Q. Played it dumb a bit.
I think that's what they call a ground lip, correct? Is there much chipping by it. I heard that can effect value so I want to know before I bid. Thank you.

My cats don't distract me much at this time of the day.
