I was at this antique store and came a across a blue mason jar that read: PATENT NOV 30 1858....
It feels way too light be anywhere near that old but the lip was pretty crude.... Does anyone know if these were commonly reproduced?

I apologize for the crude pictures

Depending on price I'd get it for resale, one just sold on E-Bay for $152.50, I say strike while people are still looking for one...

I believe the repro's list in the red book for around $10/$20 midget to $100/$200 for half gallons.Mine is a red book #9 so my prices aren't current everything is probably higher.

From a post by Georgeoj, Jar Guy...

There are not any authentic cobalt MASON'S 1858s that have a smooth lip. This particular reproduction comes in several wild colors. It comes in pint and quart. The quarts all have the number 7 on the base. The pints have 44.

As a side note, the only original medium cobalt 1858's ONLY are known in the Quart & Half Gallon size. The dark cobalt 1858 is ONLY known in the Quart size.

There are many repo's and dream series jars out there. Some are smooth based, and others have 971 or 1171 on the bases of the midget pints (what your jar is). What Jim is referring to from George is the regular pint & quart repo's. It's been covered many times, but don't feel bad, jar collectors see that question alot. [;)]
