Well I have to point out that this is an example of one of the two most critical responsibilities of the bottle makers assistant with the job of empontilling the product. In his book "Collecting Bottles" by Cecil Munsey, said it all in one sentence. It mainly said that the two main considerations of this man was "to make suire the pontil was centered and to make sure it was firmly attached.".
I have always appreciated his book; and it is one of my six favorite books for people interested in old bottles.
I sure wish I had the $s to buy this example. RED Matthews

i was looking forward to reading your post on this bottle.

i gotta say that it was this strange off - centered pontil that really
drew me to the bottle.

why is that outer ring encircling the " regular " pontil? are you
suggesting the punty rod shifted causing what we see today ?? and if so,
why is the outer ring so assymetric ( not sure that's the right word.. ) ?

thanks red, i was hoping you would post on this one.

Well buzcutt033, I think that because of the height of the bottle, a punty with two raised rings on its face was used to pick up the glass particles or hot metal (glass) that contacted the bottom of the bottle. RED Matthews

looks like whoever attached the pontil picked up the wrong punty rod. This would of been a large punty used normally for demijohns, its just a very large ring or tube, rather then a smaller one that would of normally been used for a bottle this size.

sweet bottle!
