.....Interesting how we all have different parameters for collecting. Some collect bottles from a given area.....some collect because of color....some collect because the bottle has their name in it.....some collect because "it's what they find"....some collect a particular type of bottle...(bitters, whiskeys, sodas etc).....I think that some people collect bottles because it gives them an idenity....fills missing parts of their person.

I really like the good bottles that I find....minus the Kilmers, Scotts Emulsion...etc...not that they aren't good, but they just don't ring my bell anymore. I have some low dollar bottles that remind me of great times with friends and I keep them for that reason, but they still are reasonable bottles ( S.B. Rothenburg milk glass gin) I really like color and crudity...and the Western Sodas bring that home....I don't do hutches....They pretty much look all the same, but I would proudly display a Truckee hutch or an amber San Jose hutch.... so I guess value enters into it as well.

My collection has a little of everything....a few whiskey's, a few sodas, even pot lids...Saying that....everything I have on the bottle shelf "rings my bell!!!!! & maybe completes my idenity.

Wouldn't it be interesting if some of yoooze guys...chimed in...and maybe added an overall picture of their collection....probably been done....but then I'm having my second cup of coffee and I am on a caffeine rush.....Gonna go have lunch with a friend.

I always like these sorts of questions because one of the reasons I collect various items, just not bottles, is for the commarderie. These subjects, when answered honestly and with thought, allow folks to get to know one another.

I started collecting bottles and artifacts from Orange County, California because I was born there, had an interest in local history and the items were quite different from what was then available, they were neat looking. I enjoyed the researching of long gone businesses and individuals. I dug many privies and several dumps, was among the very first to discover and use the Sandborn maps to locate privies and maintain my interest in Santa Ana, California bottles. I actually had ORIGINAL Sandborn maps in my possession.

After collecting low value pieces for awhile I lucked upon a collection of 65 BITTERS & HISTIRICAL FLASKS I could afford. Kept the Bitters and sold the flasks and other miscellaneous bottles for way more than I paid for everything. Became a Figural Bitters specialist but continued with the locals. Traveled throughout the West in search of bottles of interest, met and became friends with some of the real pioneers of the hobby. I have written a few articles for several of the current and past bottle magazines

Wife became interested in Fruit Jars as she and her family and my family were all canners. Amassed a large and respectable Fruit Jar collection. We started the Antique Bottle Club of Orange County in 1965. We were instrumental in starting a Fruit Jar Collectors Club on the West Coast. Gathered with many notable collectors.

In the summer of 1965, while on a vacation trip, our 3 1/2 year old Daughter would cutely say "WAW-WAW" every time we saw any water of any sort. In 1972 or 73 I found a nicely SCA - Purple bottle that is embossed simply and only with: WAW-WAW so you know I "Had to Have It". Still have that bottle and about 3 dozen companions.

Many, many fine to fantastic bottles have gone through my hands, seems like the hunt is more important to me than the possession of rare, valuable bottles. But most of all, it is the friends, acquaintenances and even curmudgeons that keeps me involved. These forums are now a HUGE part of that, even while I down size. I sell bottles and flask for hundreds, even thousands of dollars and dislay $.50 bottles proudly because a few of you out there enjoy them along with me.

THANX to each and every one of you for being here / there and sharing.

I see some killer stuff in there Mike! Looks super! Thanks for sharing a photo of your great display. Being a colored soda and mineral water guy, can you give me some details on whats on that bottom row? [:)]

I like this thread, sorry I didn't look into it sooner..!
Me, I collect beers & sodas from shore area towns of Monmouth County.. why? Don't ask.. [;)]

Every bottle in this pic is from Long Branch, and there are no doubles here, just one of each. I'm about half way to having every known variant from every known LB bottler.. there's even a few only examples known up there.. [:)]

I'm with Gordan I collect what ever. It is more fun that way. I think in a way. What you collect and how you collect does show off your personalty. For me i'm all mixxed up with lots of color [8D] [8D]
